New Energy welcomes Ministerial approval for Port Hedland Waste to Energy Project

22 May 2013

New Energy Corporation (New Energy) has today welcomed WA Environment Minister Albert Jacob’s decision to approve its Port Hedland Waste to Energy Project.

The approval follows last month’s recommendation to approve the project from the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA).

The Port Hedland Waste to Energy Project is an Australian first, and will convert approximately 100,000 tonnes of waste, which would otherwise have gone to landfill, into a clean and renewable energy source.

At full capacity, the Port Hedland Waste to Energy Project, which uses technology developed in Western Australia, could produce enough energy to power the equivalent of 21,000 homes in the Pilbara.

New Energy Chairman Enzo Gullotti said the approval was recognition the Port Hedland Waste to Energy Project would meet international best practise standards.

“The approval process has verified that New Energy’s solution and technology has the required track record in effective waste management, and is capable of meeting best practise in emissions standards, and as such New Energy will provide a world class environmental outcome for the Pilbara,” Mr Gullotti said.

Pilbara Development Commission (PDC) chief executive Ken King said a waste to energy project in the Pilbara offered a renewable energy solution to contribute to the energy requirements identified to meet the Pilbara Cities vision.

"This will minimise the requirement for waste to landfill and will contribute to economic diversification by generating employment during the construction and operational phases of the project," Dr King said.

"The PDC continues to work with government, industry and investors to identify and explore sustainable energy solutions that will alleviate the rising demand for power in the Pilbara.”

Town of Port Hedland Mayor Kelly Howlett said the council was pleased to be working with innovative businesses such as New Energy to develop sustainable methods of managing waste.

“New Energy’s project aims to dramatically reduce the amount of waste disposed at the South Hedland Landfill, and transform that waste into renewable energy,” Mayor Howlett said.

New Energy Chief Executive David Sneddon said it was imperative that the public and private operators in this resource rich region of WA embraced the unique opportunity to make a sustainable waste management and renewable energy solution for the Pilbara a reality.
